Follow the example set by the designer of this English-style cottage landscape, and you will learn several tricks about how to make a small property appear larger. Space is limited, but a small entry court was created at the end of the driveway; the paving that extends across the front of the house and the garage harmonizes with the house and unites the entire area. The bench and planter pots overflowing with flowers lend an informal atmosphere and extend the living space into the garden. The lawn sweeps around the side of the house, with curved lines defined by planting beds filled with masses of flowering shrubs and perennials. Pavers leading through the planting bed welcome visitors into the yard to enjoy the flowers. Although more pavers provide access to the backyard, the two areas are clearly separated, leaving the impression of greater space and creating curiosity about what lies beyond. Narrow, upright evergreens placed at the corner of the garage balance and interplay with its low roofline and its strong horizontal lines. These are echoed and balanced by an evergreen screen on the right side of the property. Tall shade trees, chosen for their pleasing shape and seasonal color, form a garden ceiling. The trees towering over the one-story house give a woodsy feeling to the scene, enhancing its cottage charm and matching the rustic character of the home's natural wood siding.
