Starter floor plans tend to be smaller, with 1500 square feet or less and usually 2 to 3 bedrooms. One story homes are actually gaining in popularity, as they are a more convenient option for young families that need to keep children close at hand. Forget about running up and down stairs with laundry and a child in your arm. Choose a one story plan with an open layout for easier living.
Smaller square footage is the primary way to cut down on expenses, as building materials and labor costs will be significantly reduced. Designing a one story floor plan will also minimize costs, as a simpler structure means more money in your pocket. First time homebuyers may want to build a small floor plan as their starter home, but leave room on the lot to expand in the future when more family arrives. A wide lot will allow enough space to construct side wings, while with a longer lot you can maintain the façade of the home but extend the building to the rear, or even build a second story.
