Southwestern Style Floor Plans

Stucco Construction and Horizontal Orientation Blend Seamlessly Into the Desert Landsape

True to their name, Southwestern style floor plans are typically constructed in the Sunbelt states such as Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, as their stucco construction and horizontal orientation blend seamlessly into the desert landscape of these locales. This style of home was derived from Spanish Colonial architecture that blends Spanish details such as arches, tile roof and stucco exterior with the massing of Colonial homes for a more spacious residence.

The low-pitched roofs of Southwestern homes are traditionally covered with wooden shingles or terracotta roof tiles. There may be a variety of rooflines with front and side gables combined with a hipped roof. The exterior is mostly clad in stucco, but materials such as stone, wood and brick are used for architectural accents and to define specific areas of the home. A second story front balcony is sometimes present and cantilevered to extend beyond the lower floor entryway. Windows are often arched or placed in pairs and have little or no decorative trim. Welcome guests with an intricately carved wooden door accented by delicate ironwork, a typical feature of Southwestern homes.

The interior floor plan of a Southwestern home is usually wide open, with columns and arcades delineating spaces while allowing air to flow freely. Design a kitchen with a Spanish influence, utilizing decorative tilework, terra cotta flooring and wood and iron elements. There will probably be a warming fireplace for cool desert nights, and an extensive rear lanai or courtyard for outdoor entertaining. As the weather is generally warm, you will want to make this your primary living space, possibly with an outdoor kitchen, chiminea, fountains and lovely pool.
