Exterior Emphasis on the Steeply Sloping Roofline
Salt Box homes are based on the earliest architectural traditions of our country, and are built in a style derived from traditional English homes but modified for long New England winters. The form is a simple rectangle, usually two stories and with exterior emphasis on the steeply pitched roofline that marks this style. The front-facing roof is shorter, while the rear slopes closer to the ground. There may be a porch or additional living space beneath the steeply sloping roofline. This architectural element was and is important, as it allows the heavy winter snow to slide off rather than accumulate on top of the roof. This style of home may have originated in the English colonies of the Northeast, but it has become popular in many locales with extreme winter climates.
The exterior of Saltbox homes are based on symmetry, with the doorway centered on the façade and windows symmetrically placed to either side. The exterior is very plain, with few ornamental elements besides decorative pendants that hang from the roofline and possibly casement windows with diamond panes. Sometimes the second floor will be cantilevered out over the first floor, breaking up the façade and providing cover for the entryway. Saltbox homes usually have a clapboard exterior, a nod to their colonial heritage, and chimneys are almost always present to warm the interior on cold winter nights.
As this is a very traditional home, the interior often follows suit with a formal dining room and living room adjacent to the kitchen and den. A stairwell is usually present in the entry hall, flanked by the formal rooms. Alternatively, update the floor plan with a more contemporary look by eliminating the formal spaces and opening up the first floor for a family friendly plan. As the house plan is usually two stories, bedrooms will most likely reside on the second floor, providing privacy and separation from the living space. An added benefit of this floor plan is the salt box roof, which allows easy expansion of interior space while maintaining the traditional façade.
