A Rural Respite Evoking Times Past


Plantation homes evoke a pastoral setting in the genteel South, a large estate with a principal house surrounded by a variety of outbuildings. The house is usually two stories with tall windows and full-width porches at both the front and rear, supported by two story columns. Plantation homes today are usually not worked for cash crops and livestock as they were in the past, but rather serve as a rural respite. Imagine sitting on your porch overlooking the fields and massive live oaks dripping with Spanish moss.

Plantation homes have a unique bond to the land, as they are usually built in low lying coastal regions and surrounded by open land. The large number of windows and abundant outdoor living space tie nature to the home. Plantation homes draw on several historical precedents such as Greek Revival and Federal styling with a symmetrical façade, two story columns, a veranda that may wrap around the entire house, and floor to ceiling windows. The porch is often two stories, with the second floor also having a full-width balcony accessible from the front rooms.

The home is usually constructed with brick or clapboard siding, or a mixture of the two. The porch may be accessed by a sweeping welcoming arms staircase that draws you up to the porch and into the home. Larger estates may have a grand central entry with double stairwells at either side of the foyer leading to the second floor. There will be traditional rooms such as formal dining and living rooms flanking the center hall. Step back into a grand space at the rear with a luxury kitchen open to the great room. A large fireplace and an abundance of windows will encourage guests to gather here. Auxiliary rooms such as a butler’s pantry and keeping room will be highlights of your home, as will the grand veranda out the rear door overlooking your plantation setting.
