Marked by a Myriad of Gables and Large Windows
Neotraditional floor plans are an eclectic mix of European and Contemporary styles that suit the taste of homeowners who wish for a large home with an open floor plan. The exterior is marked by a myriad of rooflines and gables, as well as large windows to light the spacious interior. These homes are usually found in suburban neighborhoods and would be best suited for a large lot where outdoor living space can be maximized and the streetscape will present a stately façade.
The exterior of Neotraditional homes are often brick, but may incorporate a variety of materials such as stone and stucco. The main roofline is usually hipped, while front facing gables project from different planes so that the façade is broken up by varying angles and heights. Dormers are often present and provide additional flex space in the attic or half story to be used as a bonus room or storage space. The front entrance is often marked by a two story arched portico, or there may be a partial one-story front porch welcoming guests into your home. Windows are large and often arched, sometimes reaching from floor to ceiling at the first story. This allows for the spacious interior to be bathed in light.
Whether one story or two story, a Neotraditional house plan will almost always feature an open plan with a great room that has vaulted or cathedral ceilings. In two story plans the second floor is often open to the first floor and features a balcony that looks down on the great room. The kitchen is usually adjacent to the living areas, making family time and entertaining easy. A main level master suite would be perfect in a two-story plan, providing privacy for the homeowners and older children on the second floor. Don’t forget about outdoor living space, as this large home will certainly draw guests to visit and an alluring exterior will be welcome.
