Mission Style Floor Plans
Stucco Construction and Tiled Roofs are Hallmarks of the Style
The mission style originated in California in the late 19th century and draws from the Southwest’s rich Spanish heritage. Stucco construction, terracotta tiled roofs, curvilinear parapets and deeply overhanging rooflines are hallmarks of the style. These homes are still mostly constructed in the Southwest where they blend in superbly with the desert landscape. Mission style floor plans tend to be two stories with a simple square form but highly decorative façade.
Site this home carefully, as the strong Summer sun will have a large effect on interior lighting and cooling. Maximize sunlight and heat retention in the winter by placing the living areas facing South, but provide deep overhanging eaves or additional shaded cover so strong summer sun is offset. Landscape with drought tolerant, native plants such as palm trees and cacti to reduce water waste, as lush plants are hard to maintain in the Southwestern heat. These are only a few ways to design for an eco-friendly Mission style home, but the natural materials and typical desert setting provide the perfect opportunity to take advantage of green building methods.
A mission style home will probably have a covered front porch or lanai that is supported by short, square columns and has a flat roof topped with a mission style parapet or one that is constructed of open wood beams. The roof will have a low pitch with terra cotta tiles and wide eaves. There is usually a series of arches defining the façade and windows can be square or arched and inset into the thick stucco walls. The interior should be open, with columns and wood beams defining the various living areas. Provide easy access to the rear yard where abundant outdoor living space will allow owners to take advantage of the warm weather.
