Mediterranean Floor Plans

A Mixture of Styles Drawn from Italian, Spanish and Greek Architecture

The style of home we’ve coined Mediterranean is actually a mixture of styles drawn from Italian villa architecture, Spanish haciendas and Greek coastal homes. Our versions of Mediterranean homes are distinguished by their trademark stucco exterior and red tile roof. The floor plan is almost always wide open for a laid-back and relaxing feel and, although they would fit beautifully in coastal areas, are constructed in many regions of the country.

Mediterranean floor plans are usually larger homes with two or more levels and tend to be asymmetrical for an interesting façade. Low-pitched, hipped or pyramidal roofs are often covered with terra cotta tiles, while arched entryways and windows create drama. Stucco is always used as the exterior building material and can range in color from clean white to a dramatic pastel and may be paired with stone or light colored brick. Often decorative elements are drawn from Italian and Mission styles, such as wide overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets or shaped dormers and parapets.

Entice family and friends to gather with a large kitchen open to the great room, where you can entertain while keeping busy. Site it as close as possible to the outdoor living area, because this is where you will spend most of your time. Outdoor living areas and numerous windows are the highlight of Mediterranean homes, as warm afternoon air and cool night breezes draw guests outside, while large expanses of glass provide unrivaled views from the interior.

Mediterranean patios may be built with materials such as stucco and light brick, and landscaped with palm trees, cacti and other drought tolerant plants. A chiminea is a popular type of fire pit that is both architectural and portable, perfect for cool nights. Loggias are very popular in luxury homes with a full-width, partially covered rear patio that extends all the way to a pool and gardens beyond. Construct a full outdoor kitchen with grill, stove and refrigerator for the greatest of ease in outdoor entertaining.
