Log Home

Quintessential Rustic Style Perfect for a Laidback Lifestyle

Whether you live in a rural area where log homes are prominent or you wish to build a vacation home in the mountains, you will find this quintessential rustic style perfect for a laid back lifestyle. Log homes can be rather large with two stories or more, or build a smaller cottage for one or two people to get away. Log homes are characterized by logs that are hewn square and stacked on top of one another with a system of notching and interlocking joints. The form is usually a simple square, one or two rooms deep and almost always with central or end chimneys. Log homes were popularized by European settlers who were moving across heavily wooded land and had buildings materials close at hand. They are very sturdy structures that will last centuries.

Log homes are a bit more difficult to expand, as the corners are permanently notched, but two or three unit plans can be joined together. Simple shed roof porches extending from the front and rear can add outdoor living space and create a charming façade. Widows are square and may be deeply set into the log structure with the remainder of the façade having little or no decorative embellishment. Log homes are made weatherproof and insulated by “chinking”, a mixture clay and other materials that form the white stucco-like material characteristic of this style. Log homes can actually be built in a modern style if one so wishes, employing large expanses of windows and a simple form. Or, choose a plan with gables and porches, more reminiscent of traditional log homes.

This type of house plan works best as an open plan with a kitchen looking directly into the den with a large warming fireplace. You will not be short on house guests when they learn how cozy your log home is. Bedrooms will be nearby on the first floor, or there may be a loft above to create more space for storage and guests. For additional living space build a deck out back that takes advantage of vacation views.
