Italianate Style Floor Plans

Stately But Informal Floor Plan Will Suite a Variety of Homeowners

Italianate buildings were popular in the United States from 1840 to 1885 and were built prolifically for both residential and commercial buildings. The Italianate style was part of the Picturesque movement, which disregarded long standing Classical forms of art and architecture. This new style of house was taken from the rambling Italian villas of rural Italy, with their cupolas and terra cotta tile roofs.

Italianate homes can be found anywhere from coastal resort towns to urban city centers, and their stately but informal floor plans will suit a variety of homeowners. The key exterior elements are a low-pitched roof with a square cupola rising from the center of the roofline. Both the roof and cupola will have widely overhanging eaves supported by heavy decorative brackets. Windows are almost always arched and tend to be tall and narrow with a decorative hood in the shape of an inverted U. Houses on larger lots may have a full-width front porch with elaborate columns, or narrow townhouse versions may have an entry porch held up by slender supports. Materials used in construction range from wood to stone and stucco, with stucco being the most prevalent, as it lends a light air to the structure.

The house plan of an Italianate home will be free flowing and of generous size, a great family home with plenty of room to roam. These homes are often two stories with bedrooms on the second floor, but there may be plenty of space to house the master suite on the main level in a private wing. Plan for abundant outdoor living space, as the tall windows will give great views to the rear yard and the informal style of this home will beckon guests outside. Continue the Italian theme with gardens, an outdoor fireplace and plenty of seating to enjoy a glass of wine on your back patio.
