Gothic Revival Style Floor Plans
Fanciful Detail and a Whimsical Façade
Gothic Revival floor plans are based on Medieval architectural elements and became popular as country houses in America, as they harmonize well with the natural landscape. These homes are very charming with steeply pitched roofs, numerous Gothic arches and gingerbread detailing. Those who are drawn to Victorian styles will also like Gothic Revival, as they both employ fanciful details and a whimsical façade.
The floor plan of a Gothic home is usually two stories and can be asymmetrical or symmetrical with a steeply pitched front gable dominating the roofline. The gothic gable will be emphasized by an ornately cut bargeboard. A one story porch with columns topped by flattened Gothic arches will draw visitors into this welcoming home. Windows are often shaped with the gothic pointed arch and have decorative window surrounds, usually with a drip mold. Roof-wall junctions, porches and doors have fanciful decorative ornamentation as well. Bay windows, finials, turrets and parapets may also embellish the house.
As you step off the porch and into the home, a myriad of floor plan options may greet you. Choose a plan with a traditional layout, with a center hall and stairs leading to the second floor bedrooms. This center hall may be flanked by a formal dining room and living room or study. Walk back into a great room with fireplace and views to the rear gardens through large gothic windows. You may choose to have the kitchen and breakfast nook open to the great room or layed out separately so the living area is more private. Plan for a main level master suite or place all the bedrooms upstairs for separate functional spaces.
