Retains the English Sense of Propriety and Proportion

Georgian style homes were prolifically built in the English colonies from 1700 to 1780 and still retain the English sense of propriety and proportion, presenting a stately and dignified façade. Homeowners with a classic style will be drawn to Georgian house plans for their simple grace and ease of space planning. Symmetry is key in exterior details such as window placement, dual chimneys and a simple roofline that may be hipped, side-gabled or with a prominent center gable. The entryway is often flanked by pilasters and topped with a row of small rectangular panes below a decorative pediment.

Windows are generally double-hung sash and are aligned in symmetrical rows along the façade. There is little exterior decoration besides quoins, two-story pilasters and the addition of dentils below the cornice. The roofline may be enhanced by a balustrade and two fireplaces are common, symmetrically paired along the roofline. Exterior materials were traditionally limited to clapboard siding or brick and would still suit a modern home well.

The general shape of this house style is a simple two-story box, either two or more rooms deep. This allows room for extensions at the rear to add space while maintaining the classic, flat-front façade. Another way to maintain symmetry while increasing living space would be to build identical projecting wings at the sides. A traditional interior floorplan with rooms flanking a center hall would work well with this style, allowing for a separate living room, dining room, den and kitchen. Alternatively, the first floor rooms could be a large open plan, with the second floor housing bedrooms off the hall. The Georgian style also works well for townhomes with symmetrical units, or for detached homes on a narrow urban lot.
