A Place to Retire or Tend to the Day’s Business
Studies have a long tradition of being the man’s room, a place to retire to tend to the day’s business or catch up on reading. Traditionally a study would be lined with bookshelves and dark wood paneling, heavy furniture grounding a semi-formal space. Today businesses are increasingly promoting telecommuting, which makes a home office more of a necessity than a luxury for such employees. Many homeowners also own small businesses and must have a large and welcoming home office for clients, or simply a space for supplies and reading material.
Home offices are often located on the main level, and in a smaller floor plan may take the place of a formal living room at the front of the house. The office could also be adjacent to the master suite or privately situated at the rear of the house with views to the backyard and an entrance to the patio. A second floor office may be located in the balcony overlooking the great room-this is popular for families with young children and provides a space to do homework. Alternatively, a separate bedroom may serve as both the office and guestroom with a pull-out couch providing seating and a bed.
No matter the size of your house, room can always be made for a home office. It may range from a simple room with the basic necessities such as a desk and side chair, or a grand study with built-in bookshelves, a wet bar or even a fireplace. Depending on the style of your home, the finishes may be very traditional such as dark wood and deep paint colors or modern with simple lines and slick office furniture.
