This Quintessential American Style Provides the Perfect Family Home
Farmhouse homes are pure Americana, evoking a pastoral vision of a stately house with a wide front porch, surrounded by pastures and shaded by large trees. As the farming lifestyle fades, homeowners wish to hold onto a piece of that history. Farmhouses are usually built on larger lots in rural areas, or can be modified for suburban neighborhoods. There is almost always a full-width porch present, the quintessential hallmark of this style.
Exterior materials are usually wood, possibly with the foundation clad in stone. Traditionally, stones were removed from the fields as they were prepared for plowing and were used as architectural elements within the home. Porch piers are often constructed of stone, as are the chimney and garden walls. A side gable roof is commonly used on Farmhouse homes, with second story gabled dormers. Windows are often double-hung and accentuated with decorative shutters. The porch may be full-width or even wrap around to present a welcoming façade.
As Farmhouses are sometimes sited on larger lots, there is room for future expansion. Place the bedrooms to one side of the home, with the Master Suite at the rear with a view to the gardens beyond. The living space may be traditionally oriented with formal rooms at the front and the den and kitchen beyond, or open up the entire space for a more relaxed house plan. A large country kitchen is often desired, with a center island that invites family to gather around the cook. Stylistic details such a white cabinetry, beadboard paneling and a farmhouse sink will further accentuate the style. Outdoor living space should be a priority, so play up the porches for a warm and inviting home.
