European Style Floor Plans
A Large Home Sited on an Expansive Lot
The architectural influences of European floor plans are drawn from a myriad of European styles such as French country homes, English cottages and Swiss chalets. These styles are combined in a large home that is usually sited on an expansive lot. European floor plans evoke Old World charm with delightful details such as shuttered casement windows, turrets, fireplaces and decorative woodwork. European floor plans are a wonderful family home, as they are spacious enough to accommodate a growing family.
Exterior materials are usually a mixture of stone, stucco, wood and brick, giving these homes eclectic charm. The roofline may have a combination of a hipped roof dotted with numerous gables. Dormers add further décor while providing functional space and sunlight to the interior. The front entry is often covered with either an arched entryway or a small porch to protect guests from the elements while waiting to enter. Speaking of arches, windows are always interesting in European homes and will be an eclectic mix of casements and double-hung sash, often with an arched opening.
European style floor plans are almost always two stories or more, and may even feature a lower level that will be a perfect getaway for the kids or for entertaining guests. Place the well appointed master suite on the main level in a private wing away from the living space for a mini retreat. You may even have your own fireplace, sitting room and patio overlooking the rear gardens. This floor plan is spacious, with an open layout featuring vaulted ceilings, tall windows and a combined kitchen, breakfast nook and great room. A European style home would not be complete without wonderful landscaping, so plan for abundant outdoor living to take advantage of a beautiful rear yard.
