English Cottage Floor Plans
Charming Both Inside and Out
English Cottages were prominent in New England and the South, where settlers drew on the traditions of their homeland to build quaint homes surrounded by lush gardens. Originally the homes were of timber frame construction, with exposed structural members and exterior materials consisting of stone, stucco and wood cladding. Architectural elements such as casement windows, steeply pitched roofs and wood shingles are still used today to provide old-world charm in a modern home. This style would provide the perfect vacation cottage, or site it on a small urban lot and plant prolific gardens in the English tradition.
Today’s English Cottages may be a mixture of weathered brick, course stonework, stucco or clapboard siding. Shutters add charm, as do details such as decorative chimney tops, a parapeted roof, leaded glass windows and arched entries. Some cottages may employ half timbering for that quintessential English look. The key to this form is eclecticism and personal style, so paint some elements for a pop of color, while letting the natural materials stand out. Add window boxes with blossoming flowers and train ivy to climb the chimney for a picture perfect English Cottage.
The interior of an English Cottage can be just as charming, with window seats, built-ins, and intimate spaces such as a study or sunroom. Design an English kitchen with details such as beadboard, a farmhouse sink, painted cabinets and an island with a pot rack above. As these homes are usually only one story, place the master suite to one side for privacy and the remaining bedrooms at the other end of the home. Another bedroom or play area could be built into the attic, especially if dormers are present, providing additional space in an attic alcove. Don’t be remiss in planning for your rear yard – build an inviting patio filled with potted plants and view to the gardens beyond.
