Dutch Colonial Floor Plans
Ideal as Urban Housing or Tucked Away on a Wooded Lot
Originally constructed in 17th Century Dutch settlements such as New York, this style of home drew from classic Dutch architectural elements such brick construction and a steeply pitched, thatched roof with flared ends. Urban housing was often built in this style and was prominent in rowhouse construction throughout the Northeast. This quaint style would also make the perfect country cottage tucked away on a beautiful piece of land.
There are a few key architectural elements that must be incorporated to present a classic Dutch Colonial home. Thatched roofs are rarely used in modern construction, but wood shingles are an appropriate substitute for the traditional material. The roof is almost always side gable with very little overhang at the eaves, and usually has flared ends for that quintessential Dutch appearance. In urban construction, this style is usually distinguished by parapeted roofs and paired end chimneys. Rural homes may be constructed of stone, often gathered from clearing the fields, and sometimes have Gambrel roofs. The Colonial influence arises from the simple, symmetrical form with a flat façade and central doorway flanked by windows.
Dutch Colonial homes are almost always one story, but some variations have a half-story within the attic. The house plan may be traditional with separate rooms for formal entertaining and informal gathering areas. Or an open floor plan may be employed, with a classic kitchen leading directly into the great room. A ceiling with wood beams and a focal point fireplace would add to the charm of this space. Place the Master Suite at one end of the home for privacy and provide a secluded patio with views to the gardens beyond.
