Cracker Style Floor Plans

A Rustic and Inviting Retreat Awaits

Originally built in the Deep South as cabins for settlers, Cracker homes are unpretentious and welcoming. This style of home was always built with a deep, full-width front porch to serve as an extension of the land beyond. This was a means to enjoy the outdoors while being protected from the elements, and provided a welcome relief from hot Southern summers. Without central heating and air, the large porch was a necessity and could serve today as an eco-friendly choice to reduce energy costs. Build a cracker home on a rural lot, or as a vacation home on wooded land such as a hunting camp.

Exterior details of Cracker homes are minimal, but materials are often drawn from nature. Clapboard or shingle siding is often used as exterior cladding, while stonework may be used for structural elements such as the foundation. Porch columns are usually thinner and square, as are the balustrade spindles. The form is symmetrical, with center steps leading to the porch and doorway beyond. The roof is usually a pyramidal shape and is often standing-seam metal to maintain the rustic look.

The interior of a Cracker home, especially one used for a getaway, could simply be one large room with a fireplace and small adjacent kitchen. Tuck a bedroom or two in the back, and add a rear shed porch to relax on hot Summer nights. Another option would be to separate the kitchen and living area and place the bedrooms at the side of the house to allow a view of the rear yard. Cracker homes are almost always one story, but a bedroom or bonus room could be built into the half-story within the attic. Whatever the layout, these homes never fail to provide a rustic and inviting getaway.
