Chateauesque Floor Plans

A Style Utilizing a Myriad of Design Elements to Portray a Fanciful and Stately Home

The Chateauesque style of home is often very large and emanates from the country residences of nobility in old France. The style is characterized by massive and irregular forms, steeply pitched roofs, arches, turrets and finials. This style mixes the 17th Century French Chateau with Gothic and Renaissance details and was often used for large mansions of the late-19th and early-20th century. A grand example of Chateauesque architecture is The Biltmore Estate, completed in 1895.

This plan utilizes a myriad of stylistic elements to portray a fanciful and stately home. Masonry is most often used for exterior materials, often with bold rusticated stonework in arches and window surrounds. The roofline is complicated, often with several wall dormers, turrets, parapets and finials vertically projecting from a steeply pitched roof. Chimneys can be numerous due to the size of the home, and are often shaped for an added decorative element.

Windows in chateaesque homes are unique, as they are usually set deep into the masonry walls and are divided by stone mullions into vertical units. The windows and doorways are often arched, sometimes with a Gothic arch that is pointed at the top. Balconies tend to project from the second or third floor and doorways sometimes have whimsical canopies above.

Chateauesque house plans will always be unique, with a myriad of layouts available from two to three stories and more. Only budget and imagination could stymie the design possibilities, as this is the most high-style and fanciful of all house forms. With projecting wings, rooms within turrets and grand halls for entertaining, nooks and crannies abound for the most intimate as well as majestic of spaces.
