Predominantly built in the early 20th century, Bungalow homes are a more compact version of the popular Craftsman style. Imagine the same stylistic detailing with exposed rafter tails, knee braces, a low-slung roofline and a full-width front porch on a one-story, rather than two-story house. Bungalows are the quintessential family home, providing plenty of outdoor living space and an interior that can either be broken up into traditional rooms, or planned around one large living space. The shape of a bungalow is typically square, allowing for easy space planning.
Bungalow building materials are inspired by nature, utilizing stone, stucco, wood shingles and clapboard for sheathing and decorative touches. Paint colors are traditionally derived from nature as well, with a strong use of browns and greens. Square porch columns are usually resting on larger piers that extend all the way to the ground, often with sloping sides. Windows are typically casement or double-hung with a single pane on the lower sash and an upper sash with multiple lights or decorative leaded glass.
The interior of a bungalow home is warm and inviting with plenty of windows for sunlight, space-saving built-ins and a floor plan that accommodates families both large and small. Bungalow homes are also perfect for empty nesters, with bedrooms and living space all on one level, and can be modified for universal design. This house floor plan is easily enlarged by building a dormer into the roofline, which adds a half-story to the typical one-story home and allows for living space in the attic. Build out the half-story for an additional bedroom or bonus room, or maintain the space as extra storage.
