Two Story House Plans are Flexible and Well Suited to a Variety of Living Situations
The majority of homes, built both today and in the past, have two story plans, as this provides a traditional layout with bedrooms on the second floor and living space below. A more modern take on the two story plan has a main level housing bedrooms and living space and a lower level with additional bedrooms and entertainment areas. There may even be a second kitchen so this lower level can be utilized as an apartment or in-law suite.
As you can see, two story house plans are very flexible and well suited to a variety of living situations. We typically think of a single family home with this layout, but many cities boast townhomes and rowhouses that provide the convenience of two floors without the hassle of a large yard. In cities with minimal space, building up rather than out is more economical and minimizes land use.
Almost any style of home can be built as a two story residence, whether contemporary or purely traditional. These homes can also accommodate a wide variety of lot sizes, but are particularly suited for narrow lots where space is limited. Design the exterior of your home to suite your aesthetic style, whether it be Traditional, Craftsmen, Queen Anne or Modern. Add architectural elements that will complement the layout of your two story home.
The interior may also be a take on tradition with separate living room , dining room, den and kitchen. This allows for more formal areas for those that like upscale entertaining. Alternatively, plan for a more relaxed floor plan with the living room open to the kitchen and breakfast nook. Family and friends will be able to mingle with the cook, making entertaining easy.
